Inter Milan Win the Champions League – And Complete The Treble

Inter capped off an brilliant season.  They won the Serie A, the Italian Cup and today the Champions League.  A magical season.

Diego Milito scored a brace in a 2 – 0 win over Bayern Munich, which gives Inter three European Cups over all, the first in over 40 years.  The pupil beat the master, Jose Maurinho was brought in just for this.  To give Inter European glory.  And that he did in his second try.  He beat his old boss Louis van Gaal who manages Bayern Munich, who also won their league (Bundesliga) and the German Cup.

Bayern were allowed to have possession and pass the ball around, till they got close to the penalty box, Inter were happy to let them.  With a very well organized team they contented themselves to hit Bayern on the counter, and that they did.  Both of Inter’s goals came from fast play.  First one came after a long punt from the Inter keeper Cesar to Sneijder, he then passed it to Milito with a great ball, Diego Milito then our run and out thought the Bayern defence and keeper, and finished very well to make it 1-0 in the first half after 34 minutes.

After the break it was more of the same, Bayern kept the ball, and even created a few chances, but arguably Inter’s chances off the counter attack were of better quality.  And it showed later in the second half.  In the 70th minute another pass to the middle of the pitch to Samuel Eto’o , a sniper who was asked to play out wide and defend more than attack, which he did very well.  He then passed the ball to Milito and the Argentinian  forward made his run into the box, he made van Buyten look like an amateur, turned him and finished brilliantly into the long side.  And it was over.  van Gaal had no answers to Maurinho’s tactics and Inter’s organization and quality.  I don’t think Ribery would have made a difference.  Robben looked ordinary despite trying.  But in the end Inter have better players.  And are better organized, so finally Bayern’s luck run out.

The 36 year old Zanetti made over 50 starts, he and his compatriot Cambiasso wont be going to the WC with Argentina, but today they are the deserved Champions of Europe.

Well done to them.

There was a bit of a worry about Howard Webb refereeing the game as he came under criticism this past season, but I thought he did quite well.

Now that Jose Maurinho won the CL with Inter the question is:  Will he stay in at Inter or just go to Madrid?
